Hoje trago um "saying" que tem uma espécie de crise de identidade. É que existem dois significados para este dizer.

A dar com um pau - "To give with a stick" é mais conhecido como uma frase que significa abundância de uma certa coisa. Por exemplo: Chove a dar com um pau, que significa que chove muito.

E esta é a versão Portuguesa que é também a mais antiga. Este dizer foi dito pela primeira vez pelos nossos navegadores. Naquele tempo, as naus estavam repletas de ratos e como eram demasiados, o melhor método de acabar com a praga, era dar-lhes com um pau.
E foi assim que a frase "a dar com um pau" ficou ligada ao significado de abundância.

A dar com um pau também pode querer dizer que se trata de uma pessoa insistente e de ideias fixas.

Este significado veio do Brasil e curiosamente também veio dos navios da época que transportavam escravos. Algumas das pessoas capturadas para ser escravas preferiam suicidar-se e então deixavam de comer até morrer. No entanto os seus opressores começaram a obrigá-las a comer enfiando um pau em forma de tubo na boca e a colocar comida directamente no estômago. Assim já não conseguiam morrer à fome. E foi assim que a frase ficou ligada a pessoas extremamente tenazes e insistentes.

I bring you today a saying with an identity crysis. There are two meanings for this saying. One from Portugal and another from Brazil.

To give with a Stick - "A dar com um pau" is mostly known as a sentence that means abundance of something. For example: Today is raining to give with a stick, this means that it's raining a lot.

This is the Portuguese version of this saying, and it's also the oldest one. This saying was born on the Portuguese Ships that were infested with rats. The only way to end with the plague was to hit them with a stick and kill them one by one. And the sentence "To give with a stick" became linked to the meaning of abundance.

"To give with a stick" can also mean a person that is very persistent and stubborn with his ideas.

This meaning came from Brazil and curiously it came from ships too (slave ships to be more accurate). Some of the people that were captured to be sold has slaves preferred to commit suicide instead of becoming slaves, so they stopped eating and died from starvation. But the ones that captured this people started to feed them with some sort of wooden pipe that was put down their mouth to their stomach and they inserted food down the pipe. This way they could not die from starvation. And this is how the sentence become linked to people that are so stubborn and persistent.
